This report is an aggregate of data submitted to the American Petroleum Institute (API) by 139 oil and gas companies (including 11 subsidiaries), employing 231,332 persons with a total work experience of 470 million hours during 1997.In 1996, 140 companies reported 228,209 employees with a work experience of 463 million hours. Individual company participation varies from year to year, yet 95 companies, representing 92 percent of the number of hours worked in 1997 has responded to this survey for the past 2 years.
